1st Abakaliki Ladies Open: Women Affairs Commissioner Harps On “Aggressive” Grassroots Drive

Mrs Chinwe Okah, the Commissioner for Women Affairs Ebonyi State has applauded the successful tee off of the first ever Abakaliki Ladies Open Golf Championship in the state since 24 years.

The Abakaliki Golf Club was established in 1997; the Ladies Section 2020 and the affirmed it is an epoch making event in the Club, just as concerted efforts should be made to improve women participation in the state golf development.

“I’m happy to see that women golf has finally taken a firm root in the state with the successful tee off of the Ladies Open; this has never happened before and so, it is an epoch making event,” the Commissioner emphasised.

The Commissioner however, ascribed the successful development to the efforts of the Club’s Lady Captain, Enene Fonne, whom she said, “Our Captain is a dutiful woman; I’m proud of her; we will always support her.”

“She is a go-getter and it’s for her ingenuity that the Lady Section is progressing in Abakaliki Golf Club at the moment which is attracting a lot of support to her,” just as she urged the Lady Captain not relent on her oars in other endeavours.

The Commission added, “Good enough, golf is a game that has a lot of health benefits as physical fitness; mental alertness and discipline; it will go a long way to improve socioeconomic and political status of our women in the society and many.”

“Against this backdrop, the Commissioner who is also a golfer enthused, “We’re going to ensure that golf is taken to the grassroots; we’ll go to the schools to create the awareness for the girls participation in in the game,” she maintained.

The Commissioner concluded by commending the participants who have come from different parts of the country, “Irrespective of the security threats across the country, golfers were still able to honour our invitation; God will lead you all back to your destinations in Jesus name.”
