While no food is inherently “deadly” in moderation, certain South African foods — especially when consumed frequently or in large amounts — can contribute to serious health issues over time, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.

Here are five popular foods that could negatively affect your health if eaten regularly:

1. Boerewors (Traditional Sausage)

Boerewors is rich, flavorful, and a staple at braais, but it’s also high in saturated fat, sodium, and preservatives (like nitrates).

Regular consumption may raise your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and colorectal cancer.

2. Vetkoek (Deep-Fried Dough Bread)

Vetkoek is delicious but typically deep-fried in oil and filled with fatty meats or sugary spreads.

High in trans fats and calories, contributing to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol.

3. Bunny Chow (White Bread Filled with Curry)

A Durban classic, but it’s often made with highly processed white bread and rich, fatty meat curries.

Regular intake of refined carbs and fatty meats can increase blood sugar spikes and cardiovascular strain.

4. Walkie Talkies (Fried Chicken Feet and Heads)

While culturally significant and high in collagen, these are usually fried in reused oils and may contain harmful residues from poorly regulated processing.

Repeated consumption may lead to toxic buildup from low-quality fats and oils, and potential exposure to contaminants.

5. Gatsbys (Large Sandwiches with Processed Meats and Fries)
Often packed with polony, chips, sauces, and white bread, Gatsbys are calorie-dense and nutrient-poor.

High in refined carbs, sodium, and processed meats, linked to obesity, high blood pressure, and metabolic disorders.

Important Note: These foods can be part of an enjoyable lifestyle when eaten occasionally. The real danger lies in frequent consumption, poor preparation methods, or lack of dietary balance.
