South Africa has no shortage of famous beaches – Clifton’s bronzed buzz, Camps Bay’s cocktail scene, or Muizenberg’s Instagram-ready huts.
But if you’re looking to escape the crowds and find a few secret beaches for some solitude, this list is for you.
Here are eight lesser-known South African beaches that remain under the radar – and that’s exactly why they’re worth discovering…
1. Noetzie Beach, Knysna
Hidden behind a winding gravel road east of Knysna, Noetzie Beach looks like a fairy tale postcard. Think golden sand, a forest backdrop, and a string of stone “castles” perched on the cliffs. As far as secret beaches go, it’s quiet, remote, and doesn’t make the average tourist itinerary. Bonus: You can hike in via the forest for extra off-grid points.
2. Morgans Bay Beach, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Just north of East London, Morgan’s Bay offers a wide, flat stretch of beach backed by rugged cliffs and rock pools. It’s the kind of place you can walk for kilometers without seeing another soul. Sunrises here are something else – and the dramatic cliffs at the far end are a playground for photographers and climbers alike.
3. Kleinmond’s Palmiet Beach, Overberg, South Africa
Just outside the small town of Kleinmond lies Palmiet Beach, a pristine strip where the Palmiet River meets the sea. Surrounded by mountains and part of a coastal reserve, it’s perfect for picnics, light hiking, and kayaking up the river. Clean, quiet, and far from the chaos.
4. Mbotyi Beach, Pondoland
Bordering a forest and river estuary in the heart of Pondoland, Mbotyi is pure Wild Coast magic. You can swim in the lagoon, hike to nearby waterfalls, or just camp under the stars. This is one of those places where time slows down and cell signal disappears – thankfully.
5. Natures Valley Beach, Garden Route, South Africa
Surrounded by the Tsitsikamma forest and cut off by towering cliffs, South Africa’s Nature’s Valley feels like it exists in its own bubble. The beach is long, quiet, and pristine – perfect for long walks or bodyboarding. Most travellers pass it by on the N2, which is exactly why it’s still a secret.
6. Strandfontein Beach, West Coast
Don’t confuse this with Cape Town’s more well-known Strandfontein. This one sits quietly along South Africa’s West Coast near Doringbaai. With sweeping ocean views, minimal development, and wide, sandy expanses, it’s ideal for whale watching, beach walks, and a solid braai.
7. Sevilla Rock Art Trail River Beach, Cederberg
It’s not technically a seaside beach, but this riverside gem along the Sevilla Rock Art Trail deserves a mention. Cool off in natural pools, lay out on sandy riverbanks, and soak in the surrounding ochre mountains. It’s wild, it’s peaceful, and it’s 100% unexpected.
