Jackie Phamotse says her house arrest experience was a punishment and blessing

Author Jackie Phamotse has opened up about her experience after completing the first year of her two-year house arrest sentence.

The Bare I: The Blesser’s Game writer was convicted of defaming media power couple Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo, leading to a legal battle that lasted five years before concluding at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.

She was found guilty on four charges, including two counts of crimen injuria, one of criminal defamation, and one for contempt of court.

Taking to X, Phamotse candidly shared how challenging the first few days were as she adjusted to life under confinement.

However, as time passed, she found ways to not only cope but also thrive.

“But as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, I began to find ways to adapt, to cope, and to even thrive. I have written two books and I’m completing my university studies. I have stood for my work, and protect it. That’s one thing I am proud of. Standing on my shoulders is our country’s history, and the path I have chosen to take,” she shared.

Beyond her creative work, Phamotse reflected on the personal transformation she underwent during this period.

“As I look back on this past year, I’m struck by the realisation that house arrest has been both a punishment and a blessing. It’s forced me to confront my flaws, to work on my personal growth, and to develop a deeper appreciation for life. It’s given me the rest I needed,” she said.

Her journey of self-discovery and perseverance has culminated in the upcoming release of her 13th book, which she excitedly announced.

“To my Mighty Bare nation, my beloved supporters, you have been a blessing, an unshakeable force. I can’t wait to see you when we launch my 13th book in the summer. I love you deeply,” she concluded.
