The ANC’s national working committee met on Monday to discuss the way forward regarding the coalition government.

South Africans will find out on Tuesday whether the DA will continue to be part of the government of national unity (GNU) .

The ANC’s national working committee (NWC) met on Monday to discuss the future of the coalition government.

It is understood that the ANC resolved to revisit negotiations with all GNU partners and those who helped pass the fiscal framework last week.

Briefing

This after DA and FF+ voted against Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s 2025 national budget in Parliament.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ANC said it will host a media briefing at 11am to provide an update on the discussions and outcomes of the NWC meeting held this week.

“The briefing will be led by the ANC Secretary General, Comrade Fikile Mbalula, and will cover key organisational matters, political developments, and ongoing programme implementation as discussed by the NWC.”

Future of GNU

Speaking to reporters after delivering the Solomon Mahlangu lecture in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats on Sunday, Deputy President Paul Mashatile said the NWC will decide on the future of the GNU.

Mashatile, who was believed to have been part of the NWC discussions on Monday, has been vocal about the DA voting against the adoption of the budget.

DA warned

Speaking at the inaugural Ahmed Kathrada Legacy Business Breakfast in Illovo on Monday morning about the future of the DA and FF+, Mashatile said the DA was warned of the consequences.

“Minister Steenhuisen, if you don’t vote for this budget, really, the ball is in your court. You are defining yourself outside the GNU if you don’t vote for this budget. They nevertheless went and did not vote for it.

“But, I can see some of them are working today, still working as ministers, they are going around. I would be ashamed to do that because where does the budget come from? You run to work as a minister, you have not voted for a budget, but you think it’s okay, you’re going to work,” Mashatile said.

Meanwhile, the DA’s federal executive also met on Monday night, adopting a wait-and-see attitude on the future of the GNU.
