Bjorn Fortuin was superb for the Lions, taking 8/75 with the ball and hitting 62 with the bat.
The Titans dug deep on Monday, putting up a spectacular fight to save a draw against defending champions the Lions on the last day of the CSA 4-Day Series final at the Wanderers, as the two teams shared the domestic first-class trophy.
Following on in their second innings at the Wanderers, the Titans stood firm and reached 371 at the close of play, leaving the Lions needing 82 runs to win when time ran out.
Rain delay
Earlier in the game, after winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Lions had to wait to get their first innings underway after the first day of the five-day match was abandoned due to rain.
Once the game eventually got under way, the Lions batters got off to a spectacular start.
They were anchored by Zubayr Hamza, who made 103 runs after spending more than three hours at the crease. And he was well supported by the rest of their line-up, with Mitchell van Buuren (73) and Bjorn Fortuin (62) contributing half-centuries.
The hosts ultimately declared at 413/7 in the final session on day three.
Titans innings
In response, the Titans struggled to put up a fight and were bowled out for 123 runs in their first innings, with Keegan Petersen top-scoring after making a 50-run contribution.
The Lions attack were led by seam bowler Codi Yusuf, who took 4/46, and spinner Fortuin, who returned 3/27.
Still trailing by 290 runs at the end of their first innings, the Titans were sent back in to follow on.
Clawing their way back into the trophy decider in their second innings, 19-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius hit 114 runs for the Titans – his third career first-class century in just five matches – while Petersen made 75 (his second half-century of the game) and Rivaldo Moonsamy contributed 79, as both players glued themselves to the crease with patient knocks.
Fortuin was superb, taking 5/48 to drive the Lions attack, returning match figures of 8/75, but the Titans batters stood their ground and managed to force a hard-fought draw.
