SnowWeather warningsGauteng

Winter is coming, and with that, a noticeable chill in the air and some light snow as South Africans dust their blankets and jackets off ahead of the cold season.

Weather forecasters have warned of light snowfall over the mountain peaks of Lesotho, with a possibility of the cold weather affecting other parts of the country.

Snow

Vox Weather forecaster Michelle du Plessis warned that “stormy weather is rolling in!”

“Light snow is possible over the Lesotho mountain peaks this week. From 14 to 16 April, expect wet and stormy conditions moving down from the Northern Cape, North West, and Free State — spreading across the Wild Coast and into southwestern KZN.”

Du Plessis also warned of a high-pressure system that could bring cold and wet weather to parts of KZN again.

Weather warnings

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Services (Saws) has issued several warnings for adverse weather conditions.

The weather service issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding over the northeastern parts of the Northern Cape.

A yellow level 4 warning has been issued for disruptive rainfall over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except in the northeast.

Saws also issued a yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain and heavy downpours over the southern parts of Mpumalanga.

Gauteng

Residents of Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and cool to warm weather with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “very high”.

Saws warned that residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.
