A cold, wet, and possibly snowy long weekend lies ahead, with widespread rain and freezing temperatures predicted across several provinces.

It is going to be a cool, wet and in some places freezing long weekend ahead with widespread rain expected and some snow.

South African Weather Service meteorologist Amukelani Mkhari said it was a rainy week ahead with cooler temperatures expected over the weekend and next week.

“We anticipate the rain to continue into Thursday with isolated showers and thundershowers expected going into the weekend with isolated thundershowers forecast on Friday,” she said.

Mkhari said the interior parts of the country could expect cool temperatures with maximum temperatures dropping significantly from today accompanied with the cooler conditions.

Vox Weather meteorologist Michelle du Plessis said there was a possibility of snow in Lesotho due to the low temperatures following a cut-off low.

Du Plessis said it was due to a steep upper air trough – later developing into a cutoff low– combined with a surface high-pressure system transporting cold and moist air, which will bring cold and wet weather to parts of the country.

She also said there was the possibility of widespread and heavy rains expected over parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZuluNatal, Free State, Lesotho, and surrounding regions.

Du Plessis said the cold weather was expected to drop significantly in parts of the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and surrounding areas near Lesotho.

Temperatures are expected to drop with daytime temperatures battling to reach 15°C in some places.
