‘We need more teams in the African competitions,’ Masango told SABC Sport.

Kaizer Chiefs legend Mandla Masango believes Amakhosi playing on the continent again will be good for South African football.

Chiefs have put themselves in with a great chance of playing in next season’s Caf Confederation Cup by beating Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday and reaching the Nedbank Cup final.

Amakhosi could well qualify for the competition even if they lose the final to Pirates. There are a number of permutations, well-explained here.

Chiefs legend Masango – ‘It was a good thing’

“It was a good thing that Chiefs managed to get into the final because now we need more teams in the African competitions,” Masango told SABC Sport.

“As you can see, Pirates and Sundowns, they’re doing well and it really boosts the national team in terms of having that experience and competing at that level, you know,” he added.

“I hope also Chiefs get to that level where they compete in Africa as well. We are very optimistic that the trophy drought will come to an end, that’s what we’re looking forward to. They have a chance, it’s just 90 minutes to rewrite everything, to erase all the 10 years (without a trophy).”

Chiefs, meanwhile, take on Chippa United in the Betway Premiership on Saturday. It is a game that could prove pivotal in the battle to qualify for next season’s MTN8.

Amakhosi are having another mediocre season in the Premiership, and are currently eighth. Chippa, however, are only a point behind Chiefs and have two games in hand.

‘A world of wonder’

“I think this win (over Pirates) will most definitely do a world of wonder for these guys because … you know when you’re in a big game, it gives you that motivation … that you can build momentum from,” Masango added.

“Now everyone is confident that we can … win, we beat Sundowns, why not beat Chippa? I think this was a massive boost to morale for the team. Now, it’s just a matter of being consistent.”
