Viola Davis supports South Africans amid genocide claims

Award-winning American actress Viola Davis has added her voice to the ongoing international controversy sparked by claims of a so-called “white genocide” in South Africa.

The debate, recently reignited by U.S. President Donald Trump during a tense exchange with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House on 22 May 2025, has drawn widespread attention and criticism.

Davis, known for her powerful roles and outspoken nature, took to social media to publicly reject the narrative being pushed by Trump and some American media outlets.

Sharing a video clip of a panel of journalists discussing the claims, Davis applauded CNN anchor Abby Phillip for confronting misinformation, stating that she had no doubt about where she stood on the matter.

“Spent a lot of time in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, and Durban… there is no argument. There is no justification. I’ve seen the ravages of apartheid. I’ve seen the townships — ALL Black. Full stop,” Davis wrote.

“Thank you, @abbydphillip, for speaking truth to power. I stand with my brothers and sisters in South Africa.”

The Woman King star has visited the country on several occasions and made it clear that her perspective is shaped by firsthand experience.
