The Western Cape’s coastline is a rugged mix of cliffs, beaches, and wild seas. For hikers, it’s a goldmine!

Whether you’re after panoramic views, whale sightings, or the sound of waves crashing below your feet, these five trails deliver…

1. Otter Trail – Garden Route, Western Cape

Often called South Africa’s most iconic hike, the Otter Trail hugs the coastline for 45km between Storms River and Nature’s Valley. Expect dense forests, river crossings, waterfalls, and jaw-dropping ocean vistas. It’s a five-day trek and permits are limited, so book early.

2. Robberg Nature Reserve – Plettenberg Bay

This looped hiking trail sits on a peninsula jutting into the Indian Ocean. Choose between a short 2km route or the full 9km circuit. Dramatic cliffs, seal colonies, and the chance to spot great white sharks below make it unforgettable.

3. Cape Point Trails – Cape Peninsula, Western Cape

Inside the Western Cape’s Table Mountain National Park, several trails snake around Cape Point. The Shipwreck Trail and the Lighthouse Keeper’s Trail both offer stunning views of the Atlantic meeting the Indian Ocean. Expect strong winds and postcard-worthy views!

4. Whale Trail – De Hoop Nature Reserve

Best between June and November when southern right whales migrate, this 55km, five-day hiking trail is perfect for marine life lovers. Think sand dunes, limestone cliffs, and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Gorgeous!

5. Kogelberg Trail – Kogelberg Nature Reserve

This 24km circular hiking trail winds through fynbos-rich mountains before revealing views of the ocean near Betty’s Bay. It’s less crowded than other trails and great for spotting wildflowers and birdlife.
