While winter might signal hibernation for some, it’s also a great time to head off the beaten path and explore South Africa’s quieter corners.

The Eastern Cape offers a diverse mix of experiences, spanning wildlife, history, coffee, wine and dramatic coastlines.

Here’s where to go this winter.

1. Lalibela Wildlife Reserve

Winter in the bush is ideal for game viewing. At Lalibela, near Grahamstown, cooler weather clears the air and thins the vegetation, making it easier to spot animals. This season, six rare cheetah cubs were born.

Guests staying at Inzolo Lodge can enjoy morning and evening game drives, warm fires and hearty meals.

2. Seven Fountains Village

Just outside the reserve, Seven Fountains Village has a community creche and women’s centre that gives visitors a glimpse into rural life. Locally made beadwork and knitted goods are available for purchase, supporting the village economy.

3. Gqeberha

Gqeberha is home to Mastertons, South Africa’s oldest roastery. Sip fresh coffee at this century-old spot before heading to the Donkin Reserve for sweeping views and historical landmarks. Nearby, No 7 Castle Hill and the South End Museum offer perspectives on the city’s colonial past and apartheid-era forced removals.

4. Le Chameleon, Humansdorp

Le Chameleon is a quirky café-meets-curio stop in Humansdorp. Don’t miss their toasted paninis and browse the antiques and local crafts on your way through.

5. Gamtoos Valley

In September, Mooihoek Strawberry Farm in the Gamtoos Valley lets visitors pick their own strawberries. They also sell dried fruit mixes, ideal for gifts or travel snacks.

6. Storms River

At the Storms River Petroport, grab some top-quality biltong at the Village Pantry and take in the dramatic views from the bridge over the gorge.

7. Plett Winelands

Before reaching Plettenberg Bay, turn off to The Crags to explore South Africa’s smallest wine region. Book a tasting at Newstead Lund Family Vineyards, known for award-winning Cap Classique.

8. Plettenberg Bay

Once in Plett, stop at Thyme & Again for a laid-back breakfast or snack. Stay at Tsala Treetop Lodge, set in the forest with private decks and plunge pools. Hike the Robberg Peninsula and, if you’re lucky, spot Southern Right Whales offshore.

Wrap up your trip at Simon’s Bar, where pizzas, cocktails, and live music come with a view over the Bitou River, perfect for a winter sundowner.
