Disgraced R&B singer R Kelly, 58, reportedly overdosed while incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Butner, North Carolina. According to a new court filing submitted by his legal team, the incident occurred after Kelly was administered what they describe as dangerously high levels of medication by prison medical staff.
The legal filing, submitted by Kelly’s attorney Steven Brindley, claims the singer experienced black spots in his vision shortly before losing consciousness. He was then rushed to Duke University Hospital on Friday for emergency treatment. The documents allege that during the ambulance ride, a prison officer was overheard saying, “This is going to open a whole new can of worms.”
The episode has sparked renewed controversy surrounding the singer’s treatment in custody and the broader conditions within the U.S. federal prison system. The incident now being widely referred to online as “R Kelly OVERDOSES” is not just a medical emergency but part of a larger legal battle that includes allegations of conspiracy, retaliation, and threats to his life.
R Kelly’s Condition: Blood Clots and Urgent Medical Needs Ignored
While being treated at Duke University Hospital, medical staff discovered blood clots in both of R Kelly’s legs and lungs. Physicians reportedly recommended immediate surgical intervention. However, instead of receiving the care he needed, prison officials abruptly removed R Kelly from the hospital and returned him to the prison facility. Even more concerning, he was placed in solitary confinement, according to the motion filed by his defense team.
Kelly’s attorneys argue that this decision represents cruel and unusual punishment and was possibly retaliatory, occurring just days after they filed an emergency motion regarding alleged threats to Kelly’s life within the prison.
The emergency motion submitted on June 10 paints a disturbing picture of the dangers Kelly faces while behind bars. His legal team asserts that Bureau of Prisons officials may be complicit in a murder-for-hire plot, orchestrated in coordination with another inmate, identified as Mikeal Glenn Stine, allegedly a leader in the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang.
Stine, who is terminally ill, reportedly provided a sworn statement alleging that prison officials promised him freedom in exchange for assassinating Kelly. According to the motion, the plan was for Stine to kill Kelly, be transferred to another facility, and then be allowed to escape custody.
The court documents reveal that Stine made it as far as Kelly’s housing unit in March before ultimately backing out. He then voluntarily disclosed the alleged conspiracy to both prison officials and Kelly’s legal team.
Adding to the seriousness of the claims, Kelly reportedly received a phone call from a Bureau of Prisons official warning him to avoid the mess hall, hinting that his meals and commissary items might be poisoned. These allegations, if proven, suggest a highly compromised and dangerous environment for the imprisoned singer.
Despite the gravity of these claims, federal prosecutors have strongly opposed Kelly’s latest emergency motions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien dismissed the filings as an attempt to deflect attention from Kelly’s crimes.
“Robert Kelly is a prolific child molester,” Julien wrote in his response to the Illinois district court. “He is unapologetic about it. Kelly has never taken responsibility for his years of sexually abusing children, and he probably never will.”
Julien also referenced a song Kelly allegedly released from prison in March, as part of a social media challenge. The lyrics, according to prosecutors, read: “Though I’m in this place, I know I don’t deserve this, no…”—a line they argue further demonstrates Kelly’s refusal to accept responsibility.
The “R Kelly OVERDOSES” incident has once again cast a spotlight on the many controversies surrounding the embattled singer. While his legal team demands emergency relief and intervention, public opinion remains sharply divided.
Kelly, who was convicted on multiple counts of sexual exploitation, racketeering, and obstruction, is currently serving a 30-year sentence. His appeal to the Supreme Court was recently denied, limiting his options for overturning his conviction.
Still, his lawyers are not backing down. They continue to argue that the singer’s life is in imminent danger and that prison officials are either unable or unwilling to ensure his safety and medical well-being.
