South African entertainer and reality TV star Zodwa Wabantu has responded defiantly after a Durban-based doctor filed a formal complaint accusing her of “sexualising the medical profession.” The controversial media personality, known for pushing boundaries with her performances and brand collaborations, is now threatening legal action, arguing that her constitutional rights are being violated.
The drama unfolded after Dr Neven Govender, a medical professional reportedly practicing at Phoenix Plaza in Durban, allegedly submitted a complaint to relevant medical authorities following a wellness campaign video shared by Zodwa Wabantu on social media. The video, which showed her receiving a massage and a vitamin drip, drew criticism from Govender, who said it undermined the professionalism of the medical field.
Taking to Instagram with a strongly worded post, Zodwa Wabantu publicly named Dr Govender and accused him of harassment, discrimination, and infringing on her rights to freedom of expression.
Zodwa Wabantu Fires Back at Allegations of “Sexualising” Medicine
“To the public, I have a story. Dr Neven Govender is interfering with my life,” she wrote in the caption of a post addressing the incident. “He is violating my constitutional rights and my right to dress how I choose to dress.”
The entertainer argued that the doctor’s interpretation of her video was biased and fueled by personal and cultural prejudice. She denied any wrongdoing and made it clear that she intends to take the matter further — potentially all the way to the Equality Court.
“It is sexual in his dirty mind,” she stated. “I’m going to sue him now and take him to court.”
In her continued rebuttal, Zodwa Wabantu accused Dr Govender of not only interfering in her business dealings but also discriminating against her based on her cultural beliefs and public persona. She claimed that his actions reflected a lack of understanding and respect for traditional African practices, as well as a disregard for the diverse cultural landscape of South Africa.
“Lodoti uthuka isintu nenkolo yam,” Zodwa said in isiZulu, which loosely translates to “He is insulting my culture and religion.”
She further alleged that her collaborator — the doctor who administered the vitamin drip featured in the ad — was also being unfairly targeted due to his willingness to work with her, despite her unconventional public image.
“This doctor, who works with me, embraces people of all cultures and beliefs. We are being targeted because I am Zodwa Wabantu — a woman who is unapologetically herself,” she added.
True to her bold reputation, Zodwa Wabantu has vowed not to back down in the face of what she views as unjust treatment. She says her legal team is preparing to lodge a formal case at the Equality Court, seeking to defend her freedom of expression, her professional brand, and her cultural identity.
“If I walk in public with my clothes, who is he — Dr Govender — to insult my clothes and interfere with my money?” she asked in her video response.
Zodwa, who has long embraced controversy and faced backlash for her bold fashion choices and outspoken nature, says this is not just about one promotional video — it’s about broader issues of freedom, identity, and respect.
“This is bigger than me. It’s about every woman, every artist, and every traditional believer who is being told they don’t belong because they don’t fit into a certain mold,” she said.
In the wake of the controversy, Zodwa Wabantu’s supporters have flooded her social media with messages of encouragement, praising her for standing up for herself and calling out perceived discrimination.
Many noted that the entertainer has every right to participate in brand collaborations that align with her image, and questioned whether male celebrities would face similar scrutiny for promoting wellness services.
Zodwa’s brand has always been one of authenticity — whether she’s performing barefoot on stage or promoting traditional healing practices. To her fans, this latest conflict is simply another chapter in her journey of challenging societal norms and speaking her truth.
This high-profile clash between Zodwa Wabantu and Dr Govender has also sparked broader conversations about cultural tolerance, gender double standards, and what professionalism looks like in the modern world.
For now, the entertainer appears poised to take her fight to the courts — not just for herself, but for what she believes is a wider societal struggle.
“I won’t be silenced,” Zodwa concluded. “I am Zodwa Wabantu — and I have every right to be seen, heard, and respected.”
