South African singer,Jelly Babie real name Karabo Khakhu, is proving that it’s possible to walk two powerful spiritual paths at once — her ancestral journey and her deep-rooted passion for music. At just 19, the Mabopane-born artist is capturing attention not only for her bold music career but also for openly embracing her calling as a traditional healer.
Jelly Babie recently shared personal insights into this transformative phase of her life, revealing that she had spent nearly two years resisting her ancestral calling. But now, she’s ready to accept it — without compromising the music that put her on the map.
Jelly Babie Balances Ancestral Calling and Music Career
Known widely for her hit song Jukulyn, Jelly Babie is carving out a unique space in the entertainment world. While some might expect her to abandon the spotlight in favor of a quieter spiritual path, she’s made it clear: music remains an unshakable part of her identity.
“Music is my passion; how can I stop making music? My ancestors know. Music is my other gift,” Jelly Babie told Sunday World.
This passionate statement highlights how deeply intertwined her artistic expression is with her spiritual growth. Rather than seeing the two paths as conflicting, Jelly Babie views them as complementary gifts — both significant, both sacred.
Despite beginning her training as a traditional healer, she insists that she won’t undergo a radical transformation of her image. She continues to present herself authentically, refusing to conform to stereotypes or expectations often placed on traditional healers.
“I am still young. There is time for everything. I wear my normal clothes and put on make-up and a wig; I am not going to change who I am,” she said.
Jelly Babie’s journey hasn’t been without heartbreak and difficulty. Her relationship with Bacardi star Vusi Ma R5 began when she was just 15. Tragically, Vusi Ma R5 was gunned down outside a tavern in Soshanguve in January 2023 — a loss that left a permanent mark on the young singer.
The trauma didn’t end there. Following his death, Jelly Babie struggled to continue with school life. Faced with bullying from classmates and invasive attention from teachers, she made the difficult decision to leave her education behind — at least for now.
“I dropped out of school after Ma R5’s funeral because I was being bullied by other kids at school, and teachers were getting too much into my business. Maybe I will go back [to school]. I just needed to finish this. But my journey is long; it doesn’t end,” she reflected.
This period of her life was filled with emotional turmoil. But instead of letting the grief and pressure define her, Jelly Babie turned inward and began to understand the deeper purpose behind her challenges.
“All the challenges I faced were because of this. It is starting to make sense,” she added, referring to her ancestral calling.
In addition to navigating the loss of a loved one and the demands of public life, Jelly Babie also experienced the end of a brief marriage. She tied the knot with Koketso Shibambu, but the marriage ended in under a year. Despite the short-lived relationship, she remains steadfast in her belief that her path is hers to shape.
Through every chapter — from heartbreak to healing — Jelly Babie has shown an unwavering determination to remain true to herself. Her story resonates with many young South Africans who are grappling with identity, spirituality, and personal growth in a society that often demands conformity.
As her fan base continues to grow, Jelly Babie stands out not only as a musical talent but also as a symbol of resilience and authenticity. She’s not just an entertainer — she’s a young woman boldly navigating her destiny, refusing to be boxed in by expectations.
With her fearless attitude and refusal to compromise either her spiritual calling or her music, Jelly Babie is setting a new standard for what it means to be an artist in South Africa today. She’s living proof that embracing your roots doesn’t mean giving up your dreams — and that passion can coexist with purpose.
As she continues to release music and walk her ancestral path, Jelly Babie’s journey is far from over. In fact, it’s only just beginning.
