Universal Music and Native Rhythms are proud to announce the release of the official visualizer for “Akvumi,” the deeply spiritual and resonant single from Ethno World Music pioneer, Nkonzo. The track, whose title translates to, “It’s Not Working,” is a powerful centerpiece of Nkonzo’s upcoming debut EP, Ubizo.
The “Akvumi” visualizer, available today, provides a deeply intimate and authentic look at the genesis of this powerful song. Instead of a traditional narrative video, the visualizer features exclusive studio performance footage interwoven with candid behind-the-scenes moments from the recording of the single. This approach reinforces the song’s world-class instrumentation and seamless vocal arrangements, which Native Rhythms label owner Dr. Sipho Sithole enthusiastically credited for bringing him “back in the game.”
Nkonzo’s distinctive voice shines through as he cries out a plea for divine guidance. The song’s lyrics are grounded in the harsh reality faced by many South Africans—from mothers with empty pockets to grandmothers dependent on pensions—making its spiritual questioning deeply authentic and relatable.
“Have you ever been in a situation where there is no food on the table, you have no plan, yet everyone is looking at you for a solution? Akvumi is that song, a song for anyone who has ever felt overlooked despite giving their best,” says Nkonzo. “It asks the difficult questions we all carry in our souls, but it carries them with the resilience of our ancestors and the belief of that everything will be okay.”
The release of the “Akvumi” visualizer follows the successful launch of Nkonzo’s first single, which is set to culminate with the release of the full Ubizo EP on October 31, 2025.
