What to expectWalmart

Walmart has announced that its first South African store will open in Clearwater Mall on Johannesburg’s West Rand.

This launch of the Clearwater Mall store will mark the official arrival of the American retail giant’s own-branded stores in the country.

In a statement, Walmart said that the new branch will introduce what the company calls its “Every Day Low Prices” approach to local shoppers.

The company described this as a model built on price consistency and affordability rather than short-term discounts.

“The objective is to ensure that whenever customers do their weekly shopping with Walmart, they always save money,” the retailer said.

“With Every Day Low Prices, Walmart customers can shop on their own schedule and trust that they will always get a low price on the products they’re looking for, at the quality they expect, without having to wait for short-term promotions or worrying about constantly fluctuating prices.”

Massmart president and CEO Miles van Rensburg said the opening represents a significant milestone for both the company and the local retail sector.

“We’re thrilled to bring customers on the West Rand Walmart’s promise of Every Day Low Prices together with a world-class assortment and shopping experience, both in-store and online,” he said.

Van Rensburg added that the company has been encouraged by the public’s reaction to the announcement.

“Since announcing the arrival of the first Walmart-branded stores in South Africa, the excitement has been incredible, and our team is proud to deliver this new and meaningful chapter in South African retail,” he said.

The Clearwater store will feature a customer-focused design that Walmart says aims to make shopping easier and more enjoyable.

The store layout will feature wide aisles, bright lighting, an intuitive departmental flow, and efficient checkout systems, all supported by what the company describes as “friendly, helpful service.”

What to expect

The store’s products will include fresh and frozen foods, groceries, health and beauty items, apparel, baby products, homeware, electronics, toys, sports and outdoor equipment, and seasonal goods.

Walmart said that the store’s product selection reflects a commitment to both local suppliers and international variety. Most products will be locally sourced, with the addition of selected global brands.

“Reflecting Walmart’s commitment to local community investment, the store’s product offering is largely sourced from local suppliers, complemented by a curated selection of global brands,” the company said.

Among the imported items are lifestyle products from the Beautiful range by Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore, which include kitchen appliances such as air fryers, kettles, blenders and toasters.

Walmart described the line as offering “premium quality, elegant design and soft pastel tones,” adding that it “adds an inspiring touch to customers’ regular weekly shopping trips.”

Mark Scott, Walmart’s merchandise vice president, said the goal is to strike a balance between familiarity and a sense of discovery.

“A key objective has been to broaden product choices in a way that creates a sense of discovery—where shoppers are pleasantly surprised by options that bring interest and excitement to their everyday shopping experience,” he said.

The store will employ more than 80 staff members, led by Store Manager Onicca Mothapo, who brings two decades of retail experience. Walmart described Mothapo as a leader known for her “operational excellence and people-first leadership.”

“Opening this store is deeply personal. From where I began my career as a store cashier, I could never have imagined that I would one day grow to become store manager for the first Walmart store in Africa,” Mothapo said.

The Walmart Clearwater store is located in Clearwater Mall, at the intersection of Hendrik Potgieter and Christiaan de Wet roads in Strubens Valley, Roodepoort.

The company said more details about the opening date will be announced soon.
