Actor Obed Baloyi

South African actor Obed Baloyi is finally getting his long-overdue recognition after social media users showered him with praise for his consistency, range and undeniable talent.

The seasoned performer, best known for his roles in Diep City, Giyani: Land of Blood and Ga Re Dumele, began trending after an X user declared: “OBED BALOYI is one of South Africa’s most underrated legends.”

The statement quickly gained traction, with many agreeing that the actor has not always received the level of acclaim his body of work deserves.

Baloyi’s career spans decades, with appearances in classic productions such as Soul Buddyz, A Place Called Home, Emzini Wezinsizwa and Yizo Yizo.

His portrayal of TsuTsuma on Ga Re Dumele earned him a South African Television Awards (SAFTA), further cementing his place among the country’s most respected performers.

Beyond acting, Baloyi has also made his mark in theatre as a playwright.

His works include Ga-Mchangani, which was staged at the Market Theatre and the Zwakala Festival, as well as Via Soweto.

His contributions behind the scenes have added depth to an already impressive creative résumé.

As the online conversation grew, fans applauded not only his acting ability but also his authenticity.

One user wrote: “He’s a good actor.” Another added, “He really is, and he’s a brilliant actor.”

Others highlighted how he remains true to his linguistic roots in his performances. “He doesn’t compromise his mother tongue language on all his characters… Really underrated,” one admirer commented.
