Tutu Puoane, South African jazz vocalist based in Belgium, responded to public praise from South African rapper A-Reece following her debut live performance at Hugh’s Jazz Club in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, where she delivered an intimate jazz set as part of the venue’s live music programme.

The exchange followed A-Reece’s reaction to the performance, where he shared his admiration on social media following their meeting, writing that the show was “some of the best music I’ve ever heard in my whole life.” His comment surfaced after attending the performance at the Johannesburg jazz venue, which is known for hosting small-capacity live sessions that bring together established and emerging musicians in an intimate setting.

Hugh’s Jazz Club in Braamfontein is a live performance space focused on jazz and improvisational music, offering close audience interaction with performers. The venue regularly features local and international artists in stripped-back, performance-driven formats that emphasise live instrumentation and vocal performance.

Following A-Reece’s public praise, Tutu Puoane responded directly, acknowledging both his attendance and his message. She wrote, “I had no idea who this young man was. Now I know. Thank you so much for coming A-Reece. I’m so glad you enjoyed my type of music.”

Tutu Puoane is a South African jazz vocalist born in Pretoria, currently based in Belgium, where she has built an international career over more than two decades. She studied jazz at the University of Cape Town before relocating to Europe, where she established herself within the contemporary jazz circuit through recordings, collaborations and live performances.

Her work often blends jazz with African musical influences, poetry and storytelling. Projects such as Wrapped in Rhythm and Mama Africa have explored reinterpretations of South African cultural and literary themes within jazz arrangements, performed across European and South African stages.

Her recent return performances in South Africa have included select appearances at intimate venues such as Hugh’s Jazz Club, where she continues to engage local audiences during touring periods. These performances often feature a mix of arranged material and live improvisation, consistent with contemporary jazz performance traditions.

A-Reece, a South African hip-hop artist, attended the show and later reflected on the experience publicly. His reaction added to wider attention around the performance, highlighting cross-genre appreciation between jazz and hip-hop audiences.

The interaction at Hugh’s Jazz Club reflected a moment of audience engagement that extended beyond the venue, as live performance, social media response, and artist recognition intersected following the Johannesburg show.
