Trump repeats claims of white South African “genocide”
US President Donald Trump has reiterated controversial claims that white South Africans are facing targeted violence.
Speaking in a recent address, Trump said he had ended what he described as “asylum fraud,” “catch-and-release,” and most refugee resettlement programmes, while making an exception for what he referred to as persecuted South Africans.
He claimed that white farmers in South Africa are being killed because of their race, describing the situation as a “genocide.”
According to Trump, these allegations formed part of the justification for allowing some South Africans into the United States under a protected route.
His remarks have reignited long-standing political tensions surrounding how violence and land issues in South Africa are interpreted internationally.
However, the South African government has consistently rejected these claims.
Authorities maintain that there is no evidence of genocide or racially targeted killings of white farmers in the country.
Instead, they argue that South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime that affect people across all racial and social groups.
Officials have also previously stated that crime in the country should not be misrepresented as racially motivated persecution, stressing that law enforcement efforts are focused on tackling crime broadly rather than targeting specific communities.
