J’Something
delivers a stirring reimagining of “Asimbonanga”, originally performed by the late music legend Johnny Clegg. The single was officially released via the Scatterlings imprint, and has already garnered notable support from South African radio tastemakers 947 and 702.

The single marks the first release from the upcoming Scatterlings album, a deeply personal modern interpretation of Johnny Clegg’s work – celebrating a catalogue that helped shape the sound and spirit of a nation.

This new version reintroduces the song to a new generation while preserving its spirit, bringing fresh energy and purpose, and reconnecting existing audiences to a message that continues to resonate across generations.

Originally written and performed by Johnny Clegg and Savuka, “Asimbonanga” became one of the defining songs of the anti-apartheid movement – a bold and unifying call for the release and recognition of Nelson Mandela at a time when even his name was banned. Today, its message remains as powerful as ever, reminding us of music’s ability to inspire change, bring people together, and give voice to a nation.

The Scatterlings album is a concept project created by Jesse Clegg, son of Johnny Clegg, alongside acclaimed singer-songwriter Msaki. Together, they have brought together a collective of artists to reimagine this body of work, ensuring that its message continues to live, evolve, and inspire.

In addition to J’Something, artists set to feature on the album are Grammy award-winning Zakes Bantwini, Sun-El Musician, Simmy, Jesse Clegg, Msaki and many more – reflecting the depth and diversity of South Africa’s contemporary music scene.

Speaking on “Asimbonanga”, J’Something reflects: “Growing up in South Africa, Johnny Clegg wasn’t just a musician, he was a voice of truth, unity, and courage. I had the privilege of meeting him a few times and feel absolutely blessed to be releasing this as a single. His music shaped how so many of us understood our identity and our history. To be able to reinterpret ‘Asimbonanga’ is something I don’t take lightly. It’s an honour beyond words to celebrate a man whose work meant so much to me, and to be part of a project that carries his legacy forward for a new generation.”
