Standard Bank’s Smart ID rollout has reached a milestone of 50 branches, making it the second-most prolific bank in the partnership with Home Affairs, after Capitec.

According to Standard Bank, it rolled out the service to add 50 branches by the end of April, in line with its commitment to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

Since Standard Bank began expanding its branch network that processes Smart ID applications, it has significantly increased processing capacity and improved client access, it said.

“To date, the bank has completed 5,272 applications through these new branches, with more than half of the Smart ID cards already collected by clients,” it said.

Despite these higher volumes, clients are spending, on average, less than eight minutes completing their applications in-branch.

In addition, the average turnaround time for clients to receive their Smart ID cards is approximately two weeks from the date of application, it added.

“We are now processing multiples of the number of applications compared to just a year ago. But our branches are managing these volumes efficiently,” the bank said.

With its commitment to 50 branches complete, the bank said it aims to more than double this to a network of 112 branches by the end of 2026.

The bank noted that in the rollout phase, it has limited services to its own clients to ensure stability and careful scaling.

However, it plans to broaden access in future to reach millions more customers, especially in high-demand areas where Home Affairs capacity is constrained.

Most of the branches are found in metro areas, particularly in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. However, the bank does have Smart ID access across all nine provinces.

Capitec, which has joined the Smart ID rollout for the first time through the new DHA partnership, has also rolled it out to every province.

The bank has rolled out 76 branches across the country on the new system, with more expected to be active by mid-2026.

Among the big retail banks, FNB is the only other group on the DHA site to join Capitec and Standard Bank in rolling out the new branches, though it currently has fewer up.

Overall, including the old system Smart ID branches, there are now over 150 bank branches where South Africans can get a Smart ID in the country.
