South African rapper Cassper Nyovest has opened up about the inspiration behind his 2017 hit track “Baby Girl,” revealing that the song was deeply influenced by a romantic experience that changed the direction of the record. The track appeared on his third studio album, Thuto, which was released on May 5, 2017.

Speaking about the creative process behind the song, Cassper explained that “Baby Girl” was unfinished for several years before he finally found the right inspiration to complete it.

“Firstly, I was sitting on the song for about four years and I couldn’t find any inspiration for the lyrics,” he said.

According to the rapper, the breakthrough came years later after he developed strong feelings for a woman who had a deep love for music. That relationship would eventually shape the direction and sound of the track.

“Four years later, I fell into a deep love bomb. I was infatuated with some lady, and she loved music all different types of music,” he continued.

Cassper said the woman often played music while they were together, and her taste in artists pushed him to think differently about the song. He admitted that hearing the musicians she admired motivated him creatively.

“She always used to play certain songs in her car, and I was a bit jealous of the artists she would play. That’s where the song was inspired from,” he explained.

The award-winning artist added that he wanted to create something that would connect with her personally and reflect the kind of music she enjoyed listening to. The emotions he experienced during that period also played a major role in shaping the lyrics and overall feel of the record.

“I wanted to make a song she would like, or one that sounded like the songs she listened to. It’s a combination of being infatuated with this girl, us getting up to what we got up to, and the artists she listened to. That’s what gave birth to ‘Baby Girl’.”

“Baby Girl” later became one of the standout tracks from the “Thuto” album and was supported by an official music video released in October 2017. The music video featured several well-known personalities, including Somizi and Vanessa Mdee.

The song blended hip hop, melodic influences and romantic storytelling, reflecting the personal emotions Cassper experienced while creating the record.
