Amazon has announced the launch of its Prime membership programme in South Africa.
This will give South African customers free delivery, streaming entertainment, shopping discounts, and gaming benefits under a single subscription.
The launch marks a major expansion for Amazon’s South African operations, which began in 2024, and introduces a service already used by customers in 26 other countries.
Amazon said Prime members in South Africa will receive unlimited free same-day and next-day delivery on eligible products.
They will also gain access to exclusive shopping events and discounts, streaming through Prime Video, and gaming benefits through Amazon Luna.
Customers can sign up for a 30-day free trial before choosing between a monthly subscription of R59 or an annual subscription of R399. According to Amazon, the annual option represents a 44% saving compared to paying monthly.
“We are thrilled to offer South African customers world-class shopping and entertainment benefits in a single membership through Amazon Prime,” said Robert Koen, Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Amazon.
“Since launching Amazon in South Africa two years ago, we have built a store our customers love, with a great selection of local and international products backed by a reliable delivery experience,” he added.
“Launching Prime is the next exciting milestone on our journey in the country.”
Koen said the company wants to deepen its presence in South Africa by offering customers greater convenience, savings, and entertainment options.
One of the key features of the service is free delivery. Prime members will qualify for unlimited same-day delivery on eligible orders placed before midday in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, with no minimum spending requirement.
Customers in major cities will also have access to unlimited next-day delivery on eligible products.
The programme covers a wide range of product categories, including electronics, household goods, sporting equipment, footwear, kitchen items, and everyday essentials.
Prime membership will also include access to Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming platform.
Significant value for Amazon customers

Subscribers will be able to watch Amazon Original productions and licensed international content across smart TVs, mobile devices, tablets, computers, game consoles, and streaming devices.
Amazon highlighted titles such as Reacher, Duplicity, and The Summer I Turned Pretty, alongside local productions including Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story.
The company is also bringing its flagship shopping event, Prime Day, to South Africa for the first time. The event will run from 23 to 29 June 2026 and will be available exclusively to Prime members.
In addition to Prime Day, subscribers will receive access to member-only discounts and early access to deals during major shopping periods such as Black Friday.
Gaming forms another part of the offering through Amazon Luna. Prime members will be able to stream selected games through the cloud.
Some of these games include Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Fortnite. Members will also receive free downloadable PC games each month and one free monthly Twitch channel subscription.
Jamil Ghani, Vice President of Amazon Prime, said the company has seen strong adoption of the programme across markets worldwide.
“We’ve seen first-hand how Prime transforms the way members shop and enjoy entertainment around the world – from India to Brazil, Egypt to Australia,” he said.
“In every new country we’ve launched, Prime has become an indispensable part of members’ daily lives, saving them time and money while connecting them to world-class entertainment.”
Ghani said Amazon is looking forward to bringing the same experience to South Africa and delivering what he described as significant value through the combination of shopping, delivery, entertainment, and gaming benefits.
