Portugal delivered the response they needed at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a ruthless 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in Group K.

After being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match, Roberto Martinez’s side came into this game under pressure.

They needed goals. They needed control. Most of all, they needed a statement.

They got all three.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, Nuno Mendes produced a brilliant free-kick, Rafa Leão added a late goal, and an Uzbekistan own goal completed a painful afternoon for the World Cup debutants.

For Portugal, this was a much-needed reminder of their quality. For Ronaldo, it was another night of history.

Ronaldo Opens the Scoring

All eyes were on Ronaldo before kick-off. At 41, questions had been asked about whether he should still lead Portugal’s attack at the highest level.

He answered quickly. Ronaldo opened the scoring early after meeting João Cancelo’s delivery from close range.

The goal immediately settled Portugal and changed the tone of the match. It was also historic.

Ronaldo became the first player to score at six different World Cups. He has now found the net at every tournament from 2006 to 2026. That record adds another chapter to one of football’s most remarkable careers.

Nuno Mendes Doubles the Lead

Portugal did not slow down after the opener. They kept pressing, moved the ball with purpose and forced Uzbekistan to defend deep.

Nuno Mendes then made it 2-0 with a superb free-kick. The goal was one of the standout moments of the match.

Ronaldo appeared to shape up as though he would take the set-piece, but Mendes stepped forward and fired home instead.

The clever routine caught Uzbekistan out and gave Portugal full control. At that stage, the game already looked beyond Uzbekistan.

Ronaldo Strikes Again

Ronaldo added his second before halftime. It was another big moment for the Portugal captain. His brace pushed him level with Portuguese legend Eusébio on nine World Cup goals.

It also silenced some of the debate around his role in the team. Ronaldo may no longer be the same explosive player he was in his prime, but he remains deadly inside the box.

Portugal created the chances, and he finished them. That is exactly what Martinez needed from him.

Uzbekistan Struggle to Cope

Uzbekistan came into the match hoping to frustrate Portugal.

They had shown promise in their opening 3-1 defeat to Colombia, but this was a much tougher test. Portugal’s fast start destroyed their plan.

Uzbekistan had a few attacking moments, including a disallowed goal after a foul in the build-up. However, they struggled to match Portugal’s speed, movement and finishing.

Defensively, they were stretched throughout the match. Their World Cup debut campaign is now in serious trouble after two defeats from two games.

Portugal Add More Pain

Portugal continued to dominate in the second half. An own goal extended the lead and made it 4-0.

By then, Portugal were playing with confidence and freedom. Rafa Leão later added the fifth goal near the end of the match.

His finish completed a dominant victory and gave Portugal a big boost in goal difference. That could become important in a tight Group K race.

Bruno Fernandes Controls Midfield

While Ronaldo grabbed the headlines, Bruno Fernandes also played a key role. He controlled the tempo from midfield and kept Portugal moving forward.

His passing helped stretch Uzbekistan and create space for Portugal’s attackers. Diogo Costa also gave Portugal security at the back when called upon.

This was a more balanced performance from Portugal than the one against DR Congo. They looked sharper, calmer and far more dangerous in the final third.

Group K Opens Up

The result puts Portugal in a strong position in Group K. They now have four points from two matches and a healthy goal difference. Their final group match against Colombia could decide who finishes top.

Portugal will feel much better about their chances after this win. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, remain without a point.

Their final match against DR Congo will now be about pride and trying to keep slim hopes alive, depending on other results.

Big Statement From Portugal

Portugal needed a response, and they delivered one of the most convincing wins of the tournament so far.

The 5-0 victory showed their attacking power and reminded rivals that they remain a serious threat.

Ronaldo’s goals will dominate the headlines, and rightly so. But this was also a strong team performance.

Portugal pressed well, created chances and punished mistakes. After a slow start to the World Cup, they now look alive.

For Ronaldo, the night was historic. For Portugal, it was exactly the kind of performance that can restart a campaign.
