The spirit of South Africa travelled to the heart of London as the sounds, stories and rhythms of the nation were celebrated through music in honour of Nelson Mandela Day. Bringing together some of South Africa’s most recognised performers, the Scatterlings Festival in collaboration with Mandela Day Concert highlighted the country’s diverse musical identity while celebrating Mandela’s legacy of unity, culture and connection.
Inspired by the iconic South African song “Scatterlings of Africa” by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu, Scatterlings represents the idea of people carrying their heritage, stories and creativity across borders. The name reflects a shared South African experience of identity and belonging, connecting communities around the world through music and culture.
The Trafalgar Square celebration placed South African sounds on one of London’s most recognisable stages, creating a meeting point for South Africans living abroad, international visitors and music lovers. The programme brought together artists from different generations and genres, showcasing the range of sounds that continue to shape the country’s musical landscape.
The performance lineup featured acclaimed acts including Sjava, Msaki, Jesse Clegg, Zakes Bantwini, Mi Casa, Sun-El Musician and Sipho Mchunu amongst others. Each artist brought a distinctive expression of South African music, from Afro-house and electronic sounds to soulful songwriting, hip-hop influences and traditional African storytelling.
Sjava’s performance represented the power of contemporary South African storytelling, blending isiZulu lyricism with hip-hop and Afro-soul influences. Msaki delivered her distinctive alternative sound, while Jesse Clegg continued a musical legacy connected to his father, Johnny Clegg, whose work helped introduce South African music to audiences around the world.
Zakes Bantwini brought his energetic Afro-house sound to the stage, while Sun-El Musician added his signature electronic production style that has become influential in modern African dance music. Mi Casa contributed their blend of house, jazz and soul, while veteran musician Sipho Mchunu connected the celebration to South Africa’s rich musical history through his decades of contribution to the country’s cultural heritage.
The audience responded with enthusiasm as familiar sounds filled Trafalgar Square, with crowds dancing, singing along and celebrating the performances. The event created an atmosphere that reflected the warmth and energy associated with South African live music, bringing a sense of home to London.
