Puerto Manzano won the Grade Betway Summer Cup at Turffontein on Saturday, starting at odds of 11-2.

Trained by Johan Janse van Vuuren, ridden by current leading jockey Keagan de Melo and owned by the Wernars family, the five-year-old Argentinian import defied predictions that he would not stay the 2000m of Joburg’s biggest horse race.

Puerto Manzano surged up the middle of the track in the rush to the line, overhauling the leaders and scoring by half-a-length from Mike de Kock-trained Safe Passage (5-1), ridden by Muzi Yeni, with stablemate Aragosta (8-1) in third, then a further Van Vuuren pair, Divine Odyssey (125-1) and Litigation (16-1) in fourth and fifth.
