Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan, GCFR, has died at the age of 85 on Tuesday morning.

Shonekan served as Nigeria’s Interim Head of State from 26 August 1993 to 17 November 1993.

He began his role after President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida resigned as Head of State following the events of the June 12 elections. An Interim Government was constituted and Shonekan was sworn into as leader of the transitional government towards a third Nigerian republic.

The transitional government was overthrown in a coup led by General Sani Abacha in November 1993.

Details later.
