As we enter the Christmas long weekend, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (COJEMS) said it is on high alert for any eventualities.
Joburg EMS said the state of preparedness will extend into January 2023 in Johannesburg, including responding to various emergency incidents that may occur during the festive season as well as daily operational events.
Joint operations
Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the COJEMS is an integral part of integrated response services during the festive season.
“This includes the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, South African Police Service, regional heads of the seven regions of Johannesburg and other City of Johannesburg departments.”
Mulaudzi said the joint operations will include various checks.
“COJEMS fire safety officers will verify and check for applicable approvals or licencing, and to possibly issue contravention notices. The officers will also inspect special events that have been approved by the City’s Events Joint Operations Committee.”
Flood alert
With more rain forecast, Mulaudzi said they will be monitoring all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg.
“Various parts of Johannesburg have already experienced the impact of recent storms with the flooding of susceptible roads and low-lying bridges that made traveling difficult.”
“Our disaster risk management teams are working with relevant City departments to coordinate the implementation of the City’s Flood Incident Management Plan,” he said.

Mulaudzi has advised residents and motorists to avoid low-lying bridges during a flood and not to drive on a road if it is completely covered by water.
“Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognise flood dangers. Avoid low spots, like ditches, basements or underpasses as these become extremely dangerous during a flash flood.”
“The teams are also on high alert to respond to any vehicle incidents on our routes and highways, and any form of emergency reported to our call centre,” he added.
Consideration for others
Mulaudzi has also urged residents to remain vigilant and consider their and others’ safety as priority during this festive season.
“Ensure that fireworks are used safely, swimming pools are always covered with safety nets when not in use, residents residing in low lying areas to avoid crossing river streams when conducting day to day activities, monitor young children to stay away from river streams to prevent drowning incidents,” Mulaudzi said.
