5 tips to check the purity of coconut oil at home | Fakaza News

Healthy & natural, coconut oil is quite versatile and is often used for cooking purposes and is a favourite of many.
Enriched with antioxidants, coconut oil is said to have anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
From protecting your skin to your hair and providing dental hygiene, coconut oil is the best fat that can be included in your daily diet.
However, if we take a look at the commercially available coconut oil, it is often subjected to adulteration, which is not easily identified by the naked eye.
If you are also a regular user of coconut oil, here’s how you can test its purity at home.

1. Heat test

For this test, put a pan over medium flame and heat a small amount of coconut oil in it. If it starts frothing at a low temperature and gives out a burnt smell, it is impure.

2. Fridge test

Take a small amount of coconut oil in a bottle and leave it in the fridge for an hour. If it is impure, the adulterant will float as a layer above the solid coconut oil.

3. Freezing test

It is one of the easiest tests to conduct at home for checking the purity of coconut oil. All you need to do is take a glass full of water and add 2 tbsp of coconut oil to it. Leave it for 20-30 minutes and see if the oil is solidifying or melting. If the oil is melting & mixing with the water, then be aware that you have got a fake or adulterated coconut oil. However, if it sets together or solidifies, then you have got pure coconut oil.

4. Smell & taste test

All you need to do for this test is smell it first and put a little oil in your mouth. If the coconut oil is pure, it will smell and taste great. However, if it’s adulterated, you will get to know it the second you put it in your mouth.

5. Colour test

If you regularly use coconut oil, then you will identify the adulterated oil in just a second by taking a look at it. Adulterated coconut oil is a little yellow in colour while pure one is almost transparent. You can also put some oil in a container and let it still for about 10 minutes. If it looks transparent, this also means the coconut oil you are using is pure. Also, the impure coconut oil will look a little hazy or blurry, which means it contains some impurities.
