Bongekile Simelane, known as Babes Wodumo, has had a difficult month after burying some of the closest people to her.

Her husband Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo passed away on Christmas Eve last year, at just 40 years old and his mother Zamanguni Gumede followed, dying just three weeks after laying her son to rest.

It is known Babes Wodumo and her mother-in-law’s had some intense differences and her actions during Gumede’s funeral certainly raised a few eyebrows.

Babes Wodumo was recorded dancing during the funeral service of Gumede, as the sight of this made some people uncomfortable.

Some people were applauding her for dancing at her husband’s memorial service saying, “she’s a strong woman..”

It’s un-African to be jolly when you’re bereaved… No one can convince me otherwise…

Babes also danced during her husband’s service, as a way to celebrate his music.

Critics said her behaviour was inappropriate in the moment of bereavement for other family members, however, there were other videos that showed a lighter and musical side of Gumede’s service in which other attendees also danced.

Babes was dancing next to Gumede’s coffin.

Gumede passed away after suffering a short illness on 15 January.

Speaking to Drum, Babes explained she was celebrating her mother-in-law and the life she lived.

“I wasn’t doing this to show off or that I want the media to paint me in a good light. This woman lying here is also my mother, she gave birth to my husband. So God has taught me the ministry of forgiveness and I’ve done that,” she told the publication.

Babes and Gumede’s differences

The Gqom star has been public about their tumultuous relationship with Mampinstha’s mom.

The two have shared anger against each other. Gumede said she didn’t approve of her son marrying Babes and even claimed Babes faked her pregnancy with their son Sponge.

The musician went online to lash out at Gumede.

In clip of Babes’ rant, she goes on to say that her mother-in-law must not “f**k” with her and accused her of having a drinking problem.

She continued to rant about how disrespectful her mother-in-law is before taking aim at her parenting skills, commenting on the fact that she allegedly abandoned Mampintsha when he was just three days old.
