
Joseph Egbunike, a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in-charge of Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), is dead.
According to reports, DIG Egbunike who hails from Onitsha, Anambra State, reportedly slumped and died in his office in Abuja in the late hours of Tuesday.
Egbunike is the head of the the Special Investigation Panel (SIP), constituted by Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, to investigate Abba Kyari, the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) over money laundering link with international fraudster, Ramon Abbas, commonly known as Hushpuppi.
Recall, the police headquarters had also invited and interrogated Fisayo Soyombo, the publisher of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), over a report published by the FIJ which accused Egbunike of corruption.
The report exposed alleged fraud perpetrated under Egbunike while he chaired the Budget and Finance department of the Nigerian Police Force around November 2018.
It showed how two police transit camps which were supposed to be constructed at the Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue and Falgore Forest of Kano were never executed.
The senior police officer holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons. ), B.L., a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD), and a PhD in Criminology.
