Eight suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers have been shot dead and four other wounded in Sebokeng in the Emfuleni Local Municipality in Gauteng.
It is understood the criminals were killed in a shootout with police on Thursday morning.
CIT heists
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the gang have been terrorising CIT vans in Gauteng.
“These suspects are believed to be behind a spate of cash-in-transit heists that have been occurring in Gauteng and surrounding areas.
“Acting provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni is at the scene and he will be joined by the minister of police together with the management of the South African Police Service,” Mathe said.
