
Chief Tonobok Okowa, the President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has been awarded the ‘Sports Icon of the Year’ by the Asaba Chapter of the University of Benin Alumni Association.
Chief Tonobok who is also the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, while receiving the award commended the Alumni Association for the honour done him stressing that he had received several awards from the sports sector, but this was the first time he was being honoured by an institutions Alumni.
The AFN President represented by the Special Assistant Technical to the Executive Chairman of State Sports Commission, Mr. Seigha Porbeni, said that the award will spur him to do more in the Sports sector asserting that his little efforts had been recognized and led to the honours he had received.
He therefore assured that he would redouble his efforts as he continues to raise the bar in sports development in Nigeria especially Athletics which has seen several Nigerian athletes winning medals at different sporting for a across the world.
Chief Okowa also called on the private and public sectors to work in tandem towards developing sports in the country as sports was pivotal to the rapid development of any society.
