Revealed at the same time as the double cab earlier this year, but not detailed, Volkswagen has finally confirmed price and specification details of the single cab new Amarok.

Discovered in patent drawing last year less than a month after the double cab made its global debut, the single cab bodystyle returns after bowing out in 2017 as a result of Volkswagen’s decision to market the original Amarok as model skewed towards premium rather than more work focused.

As a result of its partnership with Ford, only select markets will be privy to a single cab model, which, once again, includes South Africa where global production takes place at the Blue Oval’s Silverton Plant outside Pretoria.

Compared to the single cab Ranger though, the Amarok will not offer a cab-a-half model similar to the SuperCab, but eschews this for the bi-turbo 2.0-litre Panther turbodiesel engine not offered on the single cab Ford.

Sporting the same loadbox dimensions as the Ranger and able to carry up to 1.2-tonnes in its most basic spec, as well as two Euro pallets, the single cab Amarok, regardless of its drive wheels, has a ground clearance of 237 mm, wading depth of 800 mm and tow rating of 3 500 kg.

In total, the local line-up spans three models, one less than the Ranger, with neither having any trim levels denominators unlike the Amarok double cab.

Commencing the range, the most basic derivative produces 110kW/350Nm delivered to the rear wheels only through a five-speed manual gearbox. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.9 L/100 km and top speed of 170 km/h.

The step-up bi-turbo comes next and as a result of the extra blower, sends 125kW/405Nm to the rear or optionally all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel consumption is pegged at 6.9 L/100 km as well, which rises to 7.1 L/100 km in conjunction with the 4Motion system.

Unlike the single cab Ranger, the Amarok doesn’t have access to an automatic gearbox option and sports a conventional part-time 4Motion system with a low range transfer case. A rear diff-lock is, however, included.

In terms of specification, the 110 kW model comes as standard with 16-inch steel wheels, LED headlights, an eight-inch partial Active Info Display instrument cluster, folding electric windows, front armrest, a multi-function steering wheel, four airbags and the 10.1-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and AppConnect.

Besides its more powerful engine and optional four-wheel-drive, the main inclusions on the 125 kW derivatives is a raised suspension, standard tow bar and 17-inch Combra alloy wheels.

Colours and price

In total, eight colours are available; Clear White, Light Grey, Midnight Black, Dark Grey, Bright Beige, Mid Blue, Deep Red and Bright Blue.

Available from all Volkswagen dealers from the end of this month, but now available for ordering, each Amarok single cab’s sticker price includes a four-year/120 000 km warranty and in the case of both 125 kW models, a three-year/60 000 km service plan.
