Artists might not get a cheque from winning a Grammy award, but the recognition that comes with being a Grammy award-winning muso is big. Since winning her Grammy earlier this year, South African singer Nomcebo Zikode’s career has been on the upwards.

Zikode became the second South African woman to win the prestigious award after Miriam Makeba.

The singer from Hammarsdale, a township in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal has been travelling internationally rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in Hollywood since winning the award. Last week while in the US, the Bayethe singer shared an image of herself with actor Danny Glover. She also shared a photo of herself with executive director and the chief operating officer of the National Basketball Players Association Tamika Tremagli.

Performing for the wealthiest

“Nomcebo Zikode was in Washington DC to perform at a show she was booked for. This was a graduation ceremony hosted by a very prominent businessman from the USA,” Thabiso Tau of Nomcebo Zikode Management told The Citizen. “She was also there to meet and network with potential business partners,” said Tau. Zikode has quite a big following in the US, following the release of the global hit she has with Master KG, Jerusalema.

Nomcebo was one of the artists performing at the 40th birthday party of Elizabeth Jack-Rich, who is the wife of Nigerian business mogul Tein Jack-Rich last week. The glitzy party was held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island in Lagos attended by some of the wealthiest in the West African country.

Last week, the singer shared a statement where she denied that she and Open Mic Productions have reached an agreement.

“Nomcebo would like to categorically denounce these false and injurious reports and publicly set the record straight on the current status of the matter,” read the statement.

Nomcebo and Open Mic have been embroiled in a legal battle since 2021, over the termination of her recording agreement, which has spilt over to a song she was featured in.
