The former rector of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Professor Brian O’Connell passed away last night at the age of 77. O’Connell served as the rector of the university from 2001 to 2014. UWC spokesperson Gasant Abarder says the death of O’Connell is a great loss not only to UWC but to the South African and international higher education landscape.
“Prof as he was affectionately known was known to get his hands dirty, encouraging students to keep the campus litter-free. That was a metaphor for how he managed his tenure from 2001 to 2014 in which he took the university into transition and transition. In the context of South Africa as well to a place where it has now become one of the leading research universities in the world.”
