Blessing Oborududu of Nigeria has defeated Canada’s Morais Linda to claim the gold medal in women’s wrestling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The world’s number two wrestler beat Morais 5-1 to the first position in the 68kg category at the Coventry Arena on Friday evening.

This is Oborududu’s second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Her first was at the Gold Coast in Australia in 2018.

The wrestler had an easy ride over India’s Kakran Divya in the quarter-final with an 11-0 win, while in the round of 16, she easily dispatched off Nyeh Ngiri of Cameroon 10-0.

The 33-year-old made an easy meal of Cocker Lemalie in the semi-final with a 10-0 win.

Nigeria also secured another medal after Kolawole Esther Omolayo claimed the bronze in the 62kg women’s freestyle category.

Oborududu’s feat comes at about the same time when Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye defeated India’s Malik Anshu to clinch gold in the women’s freestyle wrestling.

She defeated Scotland’s Fountain Abbie 10-0 to book a place on the podium.

Nigeria has now won 16 medals — 7 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze.
