Squid Game

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, has recently shared insights into why he decided to move forward with season 2 of the hit Netflix series. While the first season concluded with a cliffhanger, leaving many viewers wondering what would happen next, Hwang’s decision was rooted in a desire to continue exploring deeper questions about society and human nature.

The series became a global sensation in 2021, captivating audiences with its intense drama, brutal survival game, and poignant social commentary. Despite the massive success, Hwang Dong-hyuk initially didn’t envision the story going beyond the first season. However, after reflecting on the impact the show had, he felt compelled to continue the story, especially with the unresolved questions raised at the end of season one. In particular, the final scene, where protagonist Gi-hun decides not to board a plane to see his daughter, was key in setting up the possibility for a second season.

Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that while the idea for season two has been in his mind, much of it was driven by the immense global demand and the questions left unanswered in the first season. He hinted that Gi-hun’s journey would continue, potentially exploring his return to the games to stop them, suggesting a dark continuation of the themes of exploitation and corruption that were central to season one.

In creating season 2, Hwang is focused on meeting and exceeding fan expectations. The anticipation for the new season is incredibly high, and while he feels the weight of those expectations, he aims to surprise viewers while remaining true to the storyline he’s envisioned.

With Squid Game’s success, there is also the news that a third and final season is planned, wrapping up the show’s narrative arc. Fans will have to wait to see how Hwang concludes Gi-hun’s story and whether the twisted survival game will come to an end.
Squid Game was a massive hit for Netflix, and its creator said he made season two so he could earn money.

Hwang Dong-hyuk often said he could not profit much from the season because he claimed the streamer gave the license fee for the show he was struggling to make for over a decade. When the series became such a super-hit, it ultimately had him cut offcut off from the massive back-end revenues.

“Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly, I didn’t make much,” he told the BBC.

“So doing the second series will help compensate me for the success of the first one too. And I didn’t fully finish the story,” the maker added.

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s remarks gave an insight into the disagreement the creators and streamers have been facing over the profit-sharing formula.

Last year, Netflix’s VP of Content for Korea, Hwang Dong-hyuk, said: “We’re working very hard to reward our creators fairly and at the most competitive level possible.

He continued, “We pay upfront sums that reflect what could be calculated as residuals, which in most cases lead to compensation at a higher level than if residuals were paid
