There is no doubt a new page is set to be added into the history book of Abakeliki Golf Club as the Ladies Section is set to host its first-ever Ladies Open Tournament since 24 years from November 4-6, 2021.
Recalled the Abakaliki Golf Club was established in 1997 by the then
Military Administrator, Navy Captain Walter Feghabor and the Ladies Section was created only in November 2020, after 23 years.
Interestingly again, the “women revolution” in golf at the Abakaliki Golf Club to be specific and Ebonyi State in general, is happening under the pioneer Lady Captain of the club, Enene Fonne, who came on board in November 2020.
Fonne disclosing this onerous development to SOKOnnect recently said, “It’s the break of a new dawn; history is set to be made once again as we proudly present, 1st Abakaliki Ladies Open Tournament.”
In this regard, she revealed that preparations are in top gear to ensure a memorable and hitch-free event adding, “All hands are on deck to put every logistics in place; as our first Ladies Open, there’s need to prove a point that Abakaliki Ladies are ready to develop women golf.”
Thus, the programme of event revealed that it is a three-day tournament as Friday November 4, commences hostilities, just as it is also the arrival date and cocktail.
The Ladies Category, 29- 36, competition will hold in the earlier part of the Day-1; Caddies will take their turn at noon and the ceremonial tee off will climax the day at 5:00 p.m. just as the atmosphere winds down with a cocktail.
On Friday November 5, Day – 2, Ladies handicap 0-28 and Men handicap 0-28 will be in action on the course, while on Saturday November 6, Day- 3, Ladies handicap 0-28 and Sponsors will wind down the rounds.
On same Saturday after the rounds, participants are expected back to the club house later in the day for awards and prize presentations to winners and other deserving persons which will be accorded with sumptuous “item 7.”
This justifies the reason the Lady Captain, Fonne, is calling on golfers to register for the tournament and avail themselves the opportunities of appreciating the historical hospitality and cultural heritage of the Ebonyi people, vis-a-vis the economic developments of the State.
