Furious Arsenal fans are demanding Mikel Arteta be sacked and replaced by Antonio Conte after the Gunners slipped to the bottom of the Premier League with a crushing 5-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s side started the day in 19th but dropped to the foot of the table after a bruising afternoon at the Etihad which saw some away fans head for the exits with over half an hour of the match remaining.
The Gunners were 1-0 down within seven minutes after Ilkay Gundogan latched on to Gabriel Jesus’s dinked cross to nod him.
Feran Torres doubled the lead five minutes later and Jesus made it three just before the break after Granit Xhaka was shown a red card for a horror challenge on Joao Cancelo.
Things did not get any better for Arsenal in the second-half as City dominated possession and added goals four and five through Rodri and Torres to condemn the north Londoners to the bottom of the table.
There are now significant question marks over the Spaniard’s future following this latest horror show, with angry fans demanding a change in the dugout before the Premier League resumes next month.
Supporters took to Twitter to voice their disgust at the performance and voice their opposition to the current manager.
One fan said: “If Arteta was sacked there could be no complaints imo. I don’t trust KSE whatsoever to get the right man in to replace him though. That’s my main concern.”
Another commented: “I’ve backed Arteta from the start, but he’s completely out of his depth. Decisions like starting Kolasinac who hasn’t played in the league for 8 months really isn’t helping the situation. We aren’t on City’s level, but there’s no excuse for being so disorganised.”
Someone else said: “Im done defending him #ArtetaOut.”
A fourth supporter added: “#Arsenal are now bottom of the league. Arteta, it’s time to go. #ArtetaOut”
Others turned their attention to who Arsenal should appoint next, with former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte a popular candidate.
One fan said: “Anyone would come in and do a better job at this point. Arteta was a risk that hasn’t paid off. Get him gone and bring in someone like Conte to fix this s***.”
“Fans want Arteta gone. They are celebrating City’s fourth goal. Get him out and bring in Mister Conte,” was the view of someone else.
Others said: “Hope this kicks Arteta out and brings in Conte. #Arsenal” and “Arteta will be gone by next week and we will get conte as next manager. #Arsenal.”
Conte is out of work after leaving Inter Milan at the end of last season but there are question marks over whether he would accept the job at the Emirates in the current circumstances.
