Cape Town police have made multiple arrests in connection with illegal firearms and ammunition over the past 24 hours. Law enforcement authorities have intensified efforts to crack down on gun-related crimes, particularly in areas plagued by gang activity.
Anti-Gang Unit Operation in Athlone Leads to Arrests
A significant breakthrough was made in Athlone, where the anti-gang unit responded to reports of a shooting incident in Anthony Walk, Silvertown. Acting on the tip-off, officers conducted a thorough search of a property in the area, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects.
During the search, police discovered a 9mm pistol and illegal ammunition in the possession of a 19-year-old male. Further investigation led officers to another suspect inside the house.
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, a 31-year-old male was found in one of the rooms of the property and was found to be in possession of a .38 Special revolver with five rounds of ammunition.

Both suspects were immediately taken into custody, and their firearms were seized as evidence. They are expected to appear in court soon.
Police Arrest Three Suspects in Parow for Illegal Firearm Possession
In a separate operation, police officers patrolling Parow noticed three suspicious men who immediately tried to flee when they spotted law enforcement approaching. Officers chased them down and conducted a search, which led to the discovery of a 9mm pistol in their possession.
The suspects were promptly arrested and are currently in police custody. Once charged, they will appear in the Parow Magistrates’ Court to face illegal firearm possession charges.
Crackdown on Firearms and Gang Violence in Cape Town
Cape Town has been struggling with rising levels of gun violence, particularly in areas where gang activity is prevalent. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched several operations to remove illegal firearms from the streets in an attempt to curb violent crime.
Why Gun-Related Crimes Are a Growing Concern:
-
Gang Violence – Many of the firearms seized by police are linked to gang-related activity in areas such as Athlone, Manenberg, and Hanover Park.
-
Illegal Firearms Proliferation – Unlicensed guns often find their way into the hands of criminals, making it easier for them to commit violent crimes.
-
Threat to Public Safety – Random shootings put innocent residents, including women and children, at serious risk.
-
Police Targeting High-Crime Areas – Authorities have been conducting raids, stop-and-search operations, and community policing initiatives to counter gun-related crime.
Recent Police Interventions
Over the past year, Cape Town police have ramped up operations targeting illegal firearms. Some of the notable interventions include:
-
Routine Roadblocks and Stop-and-Search Operations – Ensuring firearms are not transported illegally.
-
Raids in Gang-Infested Areas – Focused on seizing weapons and arresting gang members.
-
Community Policing Partnerships – Encouraging residents to report illegal firearm activity.
Upcoming Court Appearances
The arrested suspects from Athlone and Parow will soon appear in court to face charges related to illegal firearm possession. Police believe these arrests will help disrupt criminal networks and prevent further shootings.
Authorities continue to urge the public to come forward with any information regarding illegal firearms or suspected criminal activity.
