Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk has confirmed to The Citizen that no arrests have been and investigations are continuing as police try to track down the taxi driver that allegedly drove over Cape Town soccer legend, Lyle Johnson, after he fell off the back of a bakkie, killing him instantly.

The tragic accident took place on Monday, 24 April 2022, in Ravensmead.

According to reports, Lyle had been travelling home when the accident occurred. Police said that the 28-year-old man had been sitting in the back of a bakkie, when he lost his grip and fell over.

It was alleged by witnesses that when Lyle fell to the road, a taxi that had been travelling very closely behind, could not brake on time and drove over the young sporting star’s head, killing him instantly.

The taxi, however, did not stop and continued driving off.

Culpable homicide

Captain van Wyk said that a case of culpable homicide was opened and currently under investigation, while an accident report has been registered at the Ravensmead Saps.

Lyle’s football club, Trinitarians FC, was saddened by the tragic death of the young player. In a Facebook post, the club wrote:

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of our friend and teammate, Lyle Johnson, who passed away earlier today. Lyle passed away unexpectedly.

“We are sending our deepest sympathy to the Johnson family during this time of mourning for the loss of such a wonderful person. Lyle will be sorely missed on the Training ground and on Match days.

“As a player of Trinitarians FC, he will be remembered for his lovely smile, singing before matches and leadership on the field.

“We will share with you the details of the funeral arrangements as soon as we hear from the Johnson family… May his soul rest in peace.”
