US Hip-Hop icons, rapper Talib Kweli and producer Madlib have released their album ‘Liberation 2’, a sequel to 2007’s ‘Liberation’. The project features the likes of Mac Miller, Westside Gunn, Roc Marciano and a few others. Nyovest appears on the song ‘Nat Turner’ alongside Nigerian Afrobeat star Seun Kuti.
Kweli and Nyovest have collaborated twice before; the first time was in 2014 on the ‘Doc Shebeleza’ remix and Kweli’s ‘Fuck The Money’ in 2015.
According to Nyovest, ’Nat Turner’ was recorded in December 2022 and a music video was filmed there too in the same month.
“This album was written, recorded and mixed over ten years. It’s expansive in concept but tight in its substance and approach,” Kweli shared in a statement. “People today are taking stock of what is most important — family, health, wellness, love. The materialism and debauchery that is stereotypically associated with Hip-Hop has lost some of its lustre. Madlib and I have been consistent in our messaging. Never has there been a better time for such honest, message-driven music that pays tribute to the sounds that came before us.”
Unfortunately for you and your Spotify and Apple Music accounts, ‘Liberation 2’ is only streaming on Luminary, a subscription podcast network where Kweli, longtime collaborator Yasiin Bey and comedian Dave Chapelle host their Midnight Miracle podcast. Kweli and Yasiin Bey, collectively known as Black Star, dropped their sophomore album, ‘No Fear Of Time’, on the platform last year.
“Our partnership with Luminary allows us to retain ownership, allowing us to create an exclusive experience for listeners,” Kweli said. “I’m excited to be at the forefront of Luminary’s foray into the music space, and we have a chance to change the industry for the better with the release of this album.”
