Afro-pessimists want SA to arrest Putin to destabilise us – Mahumapelo

Chairperson of the portfolio committee on international relations and cooperation Supra Mahumapelo says the presidency has established an inter-ministerial committee to deal with the ICC’s arrest warrant for Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

The ICC in March issued an arrest warrant for Putin for the war crime of “deporting” Ukrainian children.

Fort Hare killings: Court hears of R5m hit on VC’s head as bail hearing resumes

The bail application of the five men accused of the murder of two University of Fort Hare (UFH) employees, resumed in the Dimbaza Magistrate’s Court, in the Eastern Cape, on Wednesday 10 May.

During the court proceedings, it came to light that there was allegedly a R5 million reward offered for the killing of UFH vice-chancellor Professor Sakhela Buhlungu.

Senzo Meyiwa murder trial: Witness accuses defence of lying

An eyewitness testifying in the murder trial of slain soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, accused a defence advocate of lying during the cross-exam.

Defence Advocate Charles Mnisi, who is representing Mthobisi Prince Mncube [accused number 3], was grilling witness Mthokozisi Thwala, who was one of seven people present when the Bafana Bafana captain was shot in an apparent robbery gone wrong.

Maimane launches petition to halt Gordhan’s load shedding exemption appeal

Build One South Africa (Bosa) leader Mmusi Maimane has launched a petition against the government to stop its appeal against a court ruling that compels it to exempt schools, hospitals and police stations from loadshedding.

Speaking outside the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on Wednesday morning, Maimane said South Africans faced another blatant attempt by the government to abuse its citizens.

Eskom to appoint independent panel to investigate crime, corruption

Eskom says it will appoint independent investigators to probe the various allegations made by its former CEO André de Ruyter.

Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on Wednesday grilled Eskom’s board and executives over allegations of corruption, theft and sabotage at the utility.

Proteas secure World Cup spot: ‘An honour to lead team,’ says Bavuma

Now that the Proteas’ participation at the 50-over Cricket World Cup later this year in India is confirmed, the team can get down to the business of preparing, said captain Temba Bavuma on Wednesday.

The Proteas, who at one stage were in danger of not qualifying automatically and having to play in a 10-team qualification tournament in Zimbabwe, secured their spot in India on Tuesday, after the ODI match between Ireland and Bangladesh was rained out.
