In efforts to sustain and enhance the development of golf in Nigeria Daily Trust Golf Tournament will be making its return debut in November 20, 2021 at the Ibom Icon Golf Resort in Uyo Akwa Ibom State capital.

This development was made known by the organisers recently during in a virtual press briefing in Lagos, adding that not less than 120 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament.

The one-day tournament which is basically for amateurs debuted in 2018 in Abuja and the organisers said that only golfers with handicap are qualified to participate.

The winner of the 2021 edition it was revealed, would take home a trophy and an all-expense paid trip for a weekend game in Kigali, Ruanda.

Ahmed Shekarau, the General Manager Business and Strategy iof Daily Trust in this regard ,ecouraged golfers to take advantage of the tournament to improve their status in the game.

“People travelled from different places to participate in the previous editions; the winners went home with fantastic prizes that impacted on their lives; this edition will not be different also; a trophy and a paid trip to Kigali in Ruanda for the winner; this is part of Daily Trust’s contribution to help develop the game in Nigeria,” Shekarau said.

Mr. Jolomi Ideh, a former Captain of Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos and a member of the organising committee added, “The first six winners will be given prizes – complete sets of golf bags; but the first three will get trophies in addition to the sets of golf bag.”

Mr. Ted Iwere a former Captain of Ikoyi Golf Club, Lagos and also a member of the committee reacting on the one-day duration of the tournament believes it would not have any negative effect on the credibility of the game and performance of the players as perceived by some school of thoughts, but would help save cost.

“A golfer does not need two days to play good golf; the first day of the game could produce a player’s best performance and the second day could be worst; but for one day, play your game and rest; it will even help to save cost,” he concluded.

The Daily Tournament was last held in 2019 and it is expected that it would remain regular as an annual event after the 2021 edition.
