Edo Queens made history by clinching their first Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) title after securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bayelsa Queens in the NWFL Super Six playoff. The Benin-based team accumulated 10 points from five matches, winning four and losing one.
Emem Essien’s acrobatic strike put Edo Queens ahead in the 29th minute, but Bayelsa Queens equalized early in the second half through Zainab Olopade’s goal. The result, coupled with Rivers Angels’ draw against Heartland Queens, secured the championship for Edo Queens.
This victory earns them a spot in the West African Football Union (WAFU) championship, serving as a qualifier for the next season’s CAF Women’s Champions League. It marks a significant milestone for Edo Queens, highlighting their emergence as a force in Nigerian women’s football.
