The family of Sisonke Mbolekwa, the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student who was fatally shot during a campus protest in Mthatha last month, has announced plans to appeal a court ruling that prohibits the media from broadcasting court proceedings in the case.
Sisonke Mbolekwa tragically lost his life after he was allegedly shot by a residence manager at the institution. The accused, Manelisi Mapane, is expected back in court on Friday as he applies for bail.

Last week, a media application to cover the proceedings was denied by the court, citing the sensitive nature of the case. However, the Mbolekwa family believes the decision was made without adequate consultation—particularly with those it claimed to protect.
Sisonke Mbolekwa Concerned
Family spokesperson Piaba Madokwe expressed concern over the ruling, saying:
“We are making this appeal particularly because we were told that the previous judgment was based on protecting the interests of the families—but that decision was made without consulting us.”
The family has since submitted affidavits supporting the media’s right to broadcast the proceedings, arguing that transparency is essential for those unable to attend court in person.
“We heard the court last week,” Madokwe added, “but we are now saying—please allow these proceedings to be broadcast.”
The appeal underscores the family’s desire for accountability and public access to justice, particularly for the broader WSU community still grappling with the tragedy.
