A 22-year-old man’s need for speed came to an abrupt halt when traffic officials arrested the biker for clocking 223km/h on the N1 near Centurion on Sunday afternoon.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane, the speedster was arrested on the spot and taken to the Lyttleton Police Station, where he was formally charged with reckless and negligent driving, as well as an alternative charge of exceeding the general speed limit.

Speedster out on bail

It is believed the young man told the officers that he was on his way to Krugersdorp for a “jolly day”.

He appeared in the Pretoria Central Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was granted bail of R1,500.

Excessive speeding and road fatalities

“Excessive speeding remains one of the biggest risks to road safety in the province. The majority of road fatalities are as a result of reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous overtaking, especially in the face of oncoming traffic,” Maremane said.

“I would like to urge all law enforcement officers to leave no stone unturned in dealing decisively with those who continue to disregard the rules of the road, thus putting the lives of road users at risk.”
