Confidence is often described as rare, but for Fido—born Olayemi Josiah Awosika—it is the fuel that powers both his life and his art. Growing up between Lagos and Matogun in Ogun State, he lived in spaces where survival and ambition intertwined daily. Yet, when he looks back on his early years, the artist doesn’t dwell on hardship. Instead, he speaks with warmth and gratitude.
“I was born in Lagos, but my parents are from Ondo State,” Fido recalls. “I don’t have much to say about it, but I had a great childhood with the best parents in the world. They supported me, and I’m grateful for that.”
Unlike many artists whose musical inclinations are shaped by family traditions, Fido discovered his calling on his own. “My music came from within me,” he explains. “No one in my family is a musician or into music professionally. I discovered this talent in me, and it just felt natural to pursue it.” That discovery came at the age of 14, a turning point that ignited his determination to carve out a place in the music industry.
To create his unique style, Fido drew inspiration from some of Nigeria’s most celebrated musicians. Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, juju pioneer King Sunny Adé, and fuji maestro K1 De Ultimate all played a part in shaping his sound. “Their music had soul and told stories that connected with people,” Fido says. “That energy and authenticity pushed me to create my sound.”
The result is a blend of afro-pop grooves, street-inspired lyricism, and a touch of fuji rhythms that feels both rooted in tradition and refreshingly modern.
In 2024, Fido dropped his breakout single Awolowo, a track that combined melodic vibes with raw storytelling. The song quickly spread across streaming platforms, cementing his presence in the afropop scene. For Fido, the creative process was almost spiritual. “It’s a ganja vibe, you know?” he says with a laugh. “When I heard the beat, the inspiration just flowed naturally. It was divine, like the music came straight from my soul.”
The success of Awolowo catapulted him into the spotlight, but he admits fame has been a balancing act. “It’s been great, but it’s also a learning process,” he shares. “Fame comes with new responsibilities, and I’m figuring out how to grow and develop myself.”
On August 1, 2025, Fido released his debut EP, Olayemi, a project named after his birth name to underline its personal nature. For him, there was no perfect time to drop it—just the right energy. “There’s no perfect time, you know?” he says. “My fans kept asking, ‘Fido, when’s the project dropping?’ So, I worked with my team, and we decided it was time to put it out.”
Fido: The Rising Star Who Turns Confidence Into Music
The eight-track collection combines years of recordings, carefully selected to align with his story and growth. Songs like Lungu and Boko reflect struggles from his past, while tracks such as Money Moves and Dollarpor radiate ambition and a vision for success. By blending Yoruba and English in his lyrics, Fido communicates with authenticity while appealing to a broad audience.
“This project is about me, my culture, my upbringing, and my roots,” Fido explains. “It’s about letting people know who Mr. Fido is.”
Part of what sets Fido apart is his creative ease. He insists making music never feels forced. “It’s always easy for Mr. Fido,” he says confidently. “I get in the studio with my producer, he plays the beat, and I vibe. Sometimes I write, sometimes the inspiration hits right there. It’s natural.”
This approach shines throughout Olayemi, where fuji influences mix seamlessly with contemporary afropop beats. For Fido, music is less about meticulous construction and more about flow. “Nah, it’s always easy for Mr. Fido,” he repeats, chuckling.
The EP has been warmly received by fans, who have connected deeply with its authenticity. “The reception has been amazing, fans are streaming it, and they love it,” Fido shares proudly. “When you listen to the EP, you hear my story, my upbringing, and where I come from. It’s personal, and I’m thrilled that people connect with it.”
Looking ahead, Fido sees no limits. “Expect more greatness,” he declares. “I’m aiming to take my sound international, representing us on a global stage. I want to be a good example for the genre, both locally and worldwide.”
For Fido, confidence isn’t just an attitude—it’s the foundation of his artistry. With Olayemi marking his arrival as a force in afropop, he stands ready to leave his mark not just in Nigeria, but across the world.
